Schone Rivieren is a river clean-up initiative that facilitates the collection of plastic waste found on riverbanks across the Netherlands. Since June 2025 PULSAQUA has been collaborating with Schone Rivieren on analysing the waste collected by citizen scientists along these riverbanks. The biannual litter count data is cleaned, analysed, and uploaded to a newly developed dashboard for participating citizen scientists and local stakeholders to peruse. Within this dashboard are standalone values such as the all-time amount of litter collected, and charts displaying information such as the estimated percentage of waste from a specific source, and regions with higher numbers of nurdles (tiny plastic pellets). Users can also filter the results by a range of categories, such as Waterschap, a specific trace (measurement area), river, year or season. Going forward, PULSAQUA would like to carry on gradually improving the analysis process each iteration, to reduce errors and ensure the continued delivery of actionable insights to those invested in the cleanliness of Dutch rivers.
